Selsey Pavilion Archives: 1950-1959
PAVILION, SELSEY. "Charity begins at home" is the theme of "GOOD SAM", a new dramatic comedy of family life starring Gary Cooper and Ann Sheridan as husband and wife, at the Pavilion, Selsey for the first three days of next week. The story revolves around the adventures of a family involved in hilarious and sometimes poignant complications when Sam Clayton (Gary Cooper) lets his generous impulses run away with him and reduces the family to dire straights. The climax is when the family eventually attains a peaceful security, in spite of Sam's over-generous attitude. On Thursday and Saturday. “THE CHILTERN HUNDREDS." starring Cecil Parker, A. E. W. Matthews, David Tomlinson and Lana Morris, is showing. Tony, Viscount Pym (David Tomlinson), demands leave to stand as Tory candidate for his home constituency, East Milton, but in fact has no intention of doing so. His real reason is to get married. The colonel and the constituency take him at his word, however, on his arrival home he is swept into electioneering, only to be beaten at the poll by Mr. Cleghorn the Socialist candidate by 2,000 votes. Another chance comes Tony's way when Mr Cleghorn is given a seat in the House Of Lords and this time at the by-election he stands as the Socialist. His fiancee does not approve of this change and gives financial support to Beecham, the butler, to oppose his master. With this situation, comedy is exploited to the full.
