Political Meeting – Chichester Observer – Wednesday, 29 July 1931
Transcript:

SELSEY PREPARE FOR BATTLE. At a very well attended meeting which was held at the Pavilion, Selsey on Thursday last, it was decided after a lengthy discussion, to form a Ratepayers Association and a Committee was elected. Thus we find Selsey preparing to do battle with the powers that be, on the all important question of sewerage. Listening to the earlier discussion I could not help wondering how they intended to get Committee without first having an Association. Was it to be a Shadow Cabinet or Caucus or what? Anyhow resolution was moved, "That a Committee be formed look after the interests of Selsey," but not a word was breathed, as to who was to look after the Committee and for a solid hour this resolution was discussed and then someone, who no doubt had been smiling to himself all along, suddenly made the suggestion that they ought to form an association first. The suggestion came as a thunderbolt, but after the debris had been removed and the air cleared the sense the proposition was realised and prompt action was taken. I agree a ratepayers’ association is what was wanted but I certainly think that the organisers of the meeting, should have gone about the business in the right way and not have attempted to get just the Committee they wanted and then trust to luck to get few adherents that would provide a nucleus for an association at later date. I wish the Association every success and trust it will grow strong enough to keep its Committee in check, for the problems that are facing Selsey are very serious.
