Selsey Pavilion Archives: 1930-1939
SELSEY CARNIVAL. Evening Parade Attracts Big Crowds. A carnival organized by the Selsey branch of the British Legion took place on Wednesday evening. In ideal weather the competitors assembled in Manor Road for Judging. The dismounted group A and the mounted group B were well patronized, but the entries for groups, private cars and tableaux were disappointing. The costumes were most picturesque and original, making the task of judging very hard. After the judging had been decided, a procession was formed and toured portions of the parish, headed by four pipers (arranged by Sir Archibald Hamilton, Bart.) and the Selsey Fire Brigade. The judges were: Class A, Mrs. Turtle, Mrs. Voke and Mr. G. Hearn; class B, Mrs. Warren, Mrs. Mathew and Mr. Carpenter; class C and D, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Barford and Mr. E. Swindells; class F and G, Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Wooding and Mr. Holloway. At the conclusion the prizes were presented by Mrs. Eric Coates and the Carnival Queen. Miss Jean Morey was presented with a cosmetique and her maids of honour, Misses Jose Francis, Peggy Boxall, Joyce Hawkins and Joy Batchelor were presented with strings of beads. Mrs. Eric Coates was presented with a basket of fruit by Miss Jean Wilson. Later in the evening the carnival dance was held in the Pavilion, music being supplied by Frank Stocker's band. (N.B. A very long prize list has been edited out.)
