SELSEY. Unionist Smoking Concert. A very successful Unionist smoking concert was held at the Cinema Hall Tuesday evening. Mr E. G. Arnell occupied the chair, and was supported Mr. Archibald Hamilton, Mr. Maurice Jewell, Mr. A. J. Marshall, Captain F. R. Leith and others. A large and enthusiastic audience listened to a speech from Mr. Tristram Beresford, who dealt with matters of moment in the political world. A capital variety programme was then presented, items being contributed by Mrs. Simpson, Miss Rawlins, Miss Grade Marshall, Mr. Maurice Jewell, and Mr. W. Bonnar. Mr. Harold Gilbert carried out the duties of accompanist. Dr. Humphry proposed a vote thanks to the speaker, and Mr. Arnell was thanked for presiding the initiative of Mr. Maurice Jewell. Mr. Archibald Hamilton, in proposing a vote of thanks to the artistes, made an interesting speech. Speaking of the artistes who had done much to enhance their enjoyment he said “Shalt we allude to the ladies as nightingales and the gentlemen larks! Eh? what? (Laughter). To them we tender our sincere and hearty thanks.” He went on to say “May I embrace this opportunity of publicly thanking you for the honour you have accorded in electing me President of the Unionist Association of Selsey. To my way of thinking the word Unionist is defunct as the dodo. The only two parties in the state that signify to-day. are the Imperialists, whose motto ‘MyGod! My King ! My Country!,’ and the Socialists, whose motto appears to he, "Down with everything that’s up, and up with everything that’s down.’’ However, be of good cheer I do not propose to make speech. Brevity is the very soul of wit, but before resuming my winged arm chair, I feel that I voice all your feelings when I thank Captain Leith on your behalf for alt the pains and forethought he has ever bestowed on these meetings to make them the unqualified success he invariably achieves. I behold the gallant Captain is conspicuous by his absence, just this moment retired to hide his blushes, I doubt not, but he will gain much your approbation, for to be praised by the praiseworthy is the highest praise of all.” (Applause.)
