Selsey Pavilion Archives: 1930-1939
HORTICULTURAL SHOW. The annual show of Selsey Horticultural Society was held at the Pavilion, Selsey, on Wednesday. The exhibits were tastefully laid out in the hall, but the most striking feature was the stage on which was a mass of exquisite flowers, both from glasshouses and the open garden, sent by Mrs. Norman Holden, from the beautiful gardens at Norton Priory, and tastefully arranged by her head gardener (Mr. H. R. Fogden). The exhibits were ably judged by Mr. E. W. Fuller, head gardener to Lord Woolavington at Petworth, and Mr. W. R. Shee, head gardener to Major J. S. Courtauld, M.C., M.P. of Burton Park. The judges expressed the view that the exhibits were better than in former years. with the exception of the vegetable classes, probably owing to the recent very dry weather. The flower classes were very good. especially wild flowers. The children's display of wild flowers was wonderful. At the conclusion of the show the prizes were presented by Mr. Septimus Ponder. to whom a hearty vote of thanks was unanimously accorded, on the motion of the President (Mr. W. Llewellyn White). —Mr. Ponder suitably responded, and proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. W. Llewellyn White, Miss L. S. Bidwell, the Hon. Secretary, and the members of the Committee, who had worked so ably to make the show such a success.—The majority of the exhibits were presented to the Society and were auctioned by Mr. F. W. Phipps at the conclusion of the show the Proceeds being to augment the funds of the Society. The list of prize-winners held was held over until next week.
