Selsey Pavilion Archives: 1940-1949
PAVILION, SELSEY. With its exciting setting of smuggling on the Sussex coast in the period of 1820 “THE MAN WITHIN” provides unusual entertainment on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. When his father dies, Francis (Richard Attenborough), a nervous and spineless boy, becomes the ward of Carlyon (Michael Redgrave), skipper of a smuggling vessel. The conflict actuated by the vastly different natures of these two characters, forms the nucleus of an intriguing plot. The second feature "GUN TOWN,” is a typical western. The story of “BLAZE OF NOON,” showing for the last three days, concerns the pioneering of four brothers in the field of air mail, a business they find contains more of the danger, and less of the reward than in their previous occupation of stunt flying with carnivals. Through flying in bad weather, in flimsy fabric-covered planes, sadly lacking adequate instrument aid, the lives of two of the brothers are sacrificed, while a third is permanently crippled.
