Selsey Pavilion Archives: 1913-1919
SELSEY. Beauty Show. A very enjoyable evening was spent by those who patronized the Cinema Hall on Saturday, when, after several songs, etc., by Mr. A. Wright's Company, a beauty competition was held. The first to ascend the stage was a well dressed "lady.” but the audience soon saw through "her,'' and very soon a cigar was handed up to "her". Many fair faces were seen on the stage, and competition was very keen. The four judges had some difficulty in coming to a just decision. However, the result was, 1st prize (travelling clock). Miss Budd, 2nd prize (purse), Miss Amy Seymour, 3rd prize (wrist watch). Miss Vera Abbott.. Mrs. Cory (Winifred Graham), the well known and talented authoress, gave away the prizes. In a few well chosen words she said : "I have thoroughly enjoyed this evening’s entertainment ; it was splendid. Selsey is very fortunate in having in the heart of the village excellent picture house, and if you have enjoyed this performance as much as I have, you will come again.” She concluded her short speech with a tribute to the beauty of the Selsey ladies. A competition was also held for the men, and Mr Arnold, senr. won the prize (a pipe) for almost guessing the exact number of beads in a bottle —the number he guessed was 190 the exact number was 191.
