Selsey Pavilion Archives: 1950-1959
PAVILION, SELSEY. THE story of an Indian, his adopted son, a Chinese boy whose father had been shot on the Mexican border, and the gallant horse that they train for the famous Kentucky Derby, “BLACK GOLD," is featured at the Pavilion, Selsey, for the first part next week. An Allied Artists’ special production, the film stars Anthony Quinn as the Indian, Ducky Louie as the boy he befriends, and Katherine de Mille as his wife, with, of course, “Black Gold,” after which the film was named. On the eve of the big race the Indian is badly hurt in an accident and, although his horse wins, he dies without seeing the race, leaving his wife and their adopted son to reap the reward for his years of hard work. Included the supporting programme is “SMART POLITICS.” Providing the main attraction for the second part of the week, "WHEN MY BABY SMILES AT ME,” co-stars Betty Grable and Dan Dailey, and features some wonderful old tunes, among these being “Birth of of the Blues" and “Sweet Georgia Brown.” Produced by 20th Century Fox, the film features in Technicolor the team that made "Mother Wore Tights.” Betty Grable and Dan Dailey go through some intricate song and dance routines, providing excellent entertainment. The supporting programme includes several shorts, all of which are well worth seeing.
