Selsey Pavilion Archives: 1940-1949
PAVILION, SELSEY. A motion picture that sounds as though it were the answer to every conceivable motion picture taste is promised patrons of the Pavilion Theatre beginning next Monday when Paramount's Technicolor "CALIFORNIA", is presented. Co-starring Ray Milland, Barbara Stanwyck and Barry Fitzgerald, the film features in their support George Coulouris, Albert Dekker, Anthony Quinn and Frank Faylen, plus a cast of over 5,000 players. "CALIFORNIA" is Milland’s first outdoor action picture and provides the popular star with an opportunity to display still another facet of his amazing talent. The development of the romance between Millan and Miss Stanwyck is set against the turbulent days when California was torn between those who favoured entry into the Union and those who wanted to set it up as an Empire. The leader of the latter group is portrayed by George Coulouris as the formidable, but colourful Captain Pharaoh Coffin, ruler of Pharaoh City. It is Coulouris' and Milland's rivalry for Miss Stanwyck and their opposite stand on the question of California's political destiny that provide the basis for much of this film's dramatic and exciting action. On Thursday "HUNGRY HILL" is presented starring Margaret Lockwood, Dennis Price and Cecil Parker.
