Selsey Pavilion Archives: 1950-1959
PAVILION, SELSEY. A GRIPPING story of the American submarine service is told in "OPERATION PACIFIC," showing at the Pavilion, Selsey, for the first part of next week. Starring John Wayne and Patricia Neal, the film tells how Lieut. Cmdr. "Duke" Gifford (John Wayne) rescues a baby from a Jap-held island in the Pacific and how they are subsequently rescued by a submarine. When the "sub." arrives at Pearl Harbour, Duke takes the baby to hospital where his ex-wife is a nurse. The nurse, Mary (Pat Neal) and Duke realize they are still in love, and behind the war side of the picture there is woven a romantic theme. One of the funniest films of last year comes to the Pavilion for the remainder of the week, when "THE JACKPOT" will be showing. That complete actor, James Stewart, co-stars in the film with Barbara Hale. He portrays a middle-class business man who wins one of those peculiarly American radio contests sponsored by commercial firms. Goods ranging from a diamond ring and wrist watches, to a portable swimming pool, a Shetland pony and a three years' supply of tinned soup come pouring into the house, which is being re-decorated by an arty interior decorator as another prize in the jackpot. The snag comes when the "lucky" winner finds that all the goods are taxable at the current retail price.
