Women’s Institute. The Women’s Institute held the first monthly meeting of the year at the Pavilion Wednesday, January 7th. The speaker was Mrs. Clowes, who gave most interesting talk on “The Romance of the Shopping Basket.” She told something of the origin and history of the household commodities that one buys every day, and urged her hearers to buy Empire products, and above all those that are home-grown. There was a hearty response to the vole of thanks proposed by Miss Armes to the lecturers. Business was then conducted by the President and the date of the social to be given in aid of Institute funds fixed for Wednesday, February 11th. Certificates won by members at the Horsham exhibition were distributed. A short, but interesting roll call, was taken after tea. on the subject of “Beauty Spots West Sussex.” After this, the members of the Study Circle acted the scenes from the “Merchant of Venice,” which they had previously given at the group conference; this was greatly enjoyed by all present. The cast included : —Mrs. Maidment, Miss Maidment. Mrs. Godel, Mrs. Beatty, Miss Marshall. Miss Halsted, Mrs. E. Homer, and Mrs. L. Homer.
